M.I.A., Kala – As mentioned during the Get Loaded recap, M.I.A’s latest release and tour in support is bonkers. Arular gave a strong entry to Maya’s playful-political banter over 3rd world beats modus operandi – Kala takes this formula, perfects it, and adds more thunder, growl and grime. The playful edge is still evident (“Mango Pickle”, “Come Around”, “Jimmy”), but with a demanding snear all but knocking you sideways for attention. “Bamboo Banger”‘s boast of returned power make you believe that she is capable of taking over the world at any moment. Which may likely happen from all of the worthy praise she has gained from this album and her live shows. Her persistence in spotlighting the injustices and lack of recognition to poorer countries is heightened, but does not become pedantic. I am actually endeared to the Wilcannia Mob and Afrikan Boy (Nigeria representin’ as usual) is a fresh take on old school hip hop. The global politics only add to the ferocity of her songs, matching the noisy, chaotic rhythms
I wish I could force everyone to own this album, it’s just that good. Plus the imagery in the liner notes is quite stellar (I guess she’s getting back to her visual arts roots).
